The D. Luiz I Bridge, which connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, was completed in 1887. In 1880, with the intention of building a bridge to replace the D. Maria II Bridge, a public tender was opened, won by the Belgian company Societé Willebroek. The bridge weighs 3045 tons and has two decks 2 meters wide each. The upper deck has an extension of 355 meters and the lower one only 175 meters. The upper deck has always been reserved for the circulation of public transport, from mule-drawn carts, known in Portugal as the 'American', to electric cars, buses and currently the metro. It was until 1943 a tolled tip.
