Its origin dates back to the 5th century, when the existence of a locality in this place with the designation 'Cale' is mentioned. This place-name later evolved into Portucale and, in the 9th century, this name no longer only designates the village, but also the surrounding area. In the 14th century, a new wall was built that delimits the historic nucleus of Porto, which was given the name ‘Fernandina Wall’. The active participation of the city of Porto in the discoveries is also known, with Infante D. Henrique's armada departing from here to participate in the conquest of Ceuta. In the 17th century, the signing of the Methuen Treaty facilitated the trade and export of wines to Great Britain and created the Royal Companhia da Agricultura dos Vinhos do Alto Douro, thus promoting the growth of the Porto economy. The city's renovation began with the Republic, through the opening of Avenida dos Aliados and the construction of the Novos Paços do Concelho. São Bento Station is inaugurated in 1909. Other events followed that allowed the city of Porto to become a cosmopolitan center and a point of world interest, including the approval of the First Municipal Urbanization Plan, the nomination of the city as a World Heritage Site.
